Why More People Are Switching to Reusable Period Products (and What’s New in the Market)

If you’ve been even a little curious about reusable period products, you’re not alone. Over the past few years, more people have started exploring options like menstrual cups, cloth pads, and period underwear—not just because they’re eco-friendly, but because they actually work. And honestly, the idea of creating less waste and saving money over time does sound pretty appealing.

But it’s not just about sustainability anymore. Recent innovations have made reusable period care way more user-friendly than it used to be. Menstrual cups, especially, have come a long way from their early, one-size-fits-some days.

Let’s take a look at what’s changing—and why you might want to consider making the switch if you haven’t already.

Menstrual Cups: Better Materials, Smarter Designs

At first glance, menstrual cups might seem a little intimidating. It’s this small bell-shaped cup that you insert, it catches your flow, and you empty and clean it every 8 to 12 hours. That’s the general idea. But when you dig in a little deeper, it gets more interesting.

One of the biggest developments in recent years has been the shift toward newer materials. Some brands now use TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) instead of traditional silicone. Why does that matter? Well, TPE is a medical-grade material that tends to resist bacterial growth a little better than some other options. It’s hypoallergenic, non-porous, and less likely to irritate sensitive skin. People with latex sensitivities or silicone concerns often find it a more comfortable alternative.

There’s also something kind of reassuring about using a material that doesn’t hold onto odors or stains the way some older designs used to. TPE cups often feel softer and more flexible too, which can make insertion and removal easier—especially if you’re just starting out.

Beyond the materials, companies have gotten a lot smarter about design. A great example is MeLuna, a company that offers a wide range of menstrual cup sizes and firmness levels. Unlike many brands that stick to just a couple of options, MeLuna actually customizes their cups based on your anatomy and lifestyle.

That might sound like overkill, but it’s surprisingly helpful. For instance, if you have a low cervix, they make a shorter cup. If you’re more active or have strong pelvic muscles, they offer a firmer option. You can even choose your stem style—like ball, ring, or no stem at all. It’s all about finding what works for your body, rather than trying to adapt to something that kind of fits.

Why People Stick With Menstrual Cups

Once people get the hang of it, many say they’d never go back. There’s no rustling sound, no string, and no need to carry spares in your bag (unless you want to). You can go hours without thinking about it, even overnight. And when you compare the cost of one cup—maybe $30 or so—to years of buying disposable products, the savings add up quickly.

There’s also a quiet sort of confidence that comes from feeling covered for most of the day without worrying about leaks. Cups can hold quite a bit more than a pad or tampon, which makes them ideal for folks with heavy flow. That said, the first few cycles with a cup can be a learning curve. Some people take to it right away, others need a few tries.

And yes, you do need to be comfortable getting a bit more personal with your anatomy. It’s not everyone’s thing, but for many, it becomes routine surprisingly fast.

What About Cloth Pads?

If cups feel like too much of a leap, cloth pads are a gentle place to start. They’re pretty much just a reusable version of a pad—soft layers of absorbent fabric that snap around your underwear instead of sticking. Rinse, wash, reuse. That’s it.

Cloth pads don’t contain the perfumes or plastic coatings found in a lot of disposables, which is a huge plus if you’ve ever had irritation down there and weren’t quite sure why. They come in lots of sizes and patterns, and most last for several years with basic care.

There’s a certain satisfaction in finding a system that works for you, and it feels kind of good knowing you’re not throwing away a pile of used pads every month. They’re especially nice for nighttime or lounging days, and some people even layer them with other products for extra protection.

Of course, the tradeoff is having to carry your used ones home if you’re out and about—but with wet bags and discreet travel options, that’s more manageable than it sounds.

Period Underwear: Comfortable, Low-Maintenance, Discreet

And then there’s period underwear, which might be the easiest reusable option of all. You wear them just like regular underwear, and they have built-in absorbent layers that trap moisture and odor. Some pairs can hold as much as two tampons’ worth of blood, while still looking and feeling surprisingly normal.

Period underwear works great as a backup to a cup or on its own for lighter days. Some people use it at night, others wear it all cycle long. There’s something undeniably comforting about not having to deal with pads or tampons at all—just pull on your underwear and go.

The main downside? They take a bit longer to dry after washing, and you’ll probably want a few pairs in rotation. But overall, they’re low-fuss and easy to love once you try them.

So, Where Do You Even Start?

Here’s the thing: with so many options out there now, it’s not always obvious which product—or combination—will work best for your body and lifestyle. That’s especially true for menstrual cups, where size, firmness, and even stem length can make a huge difference.

The easiest way to figure it out? Take a menstrual cup quiz. Several brands, including MeLuna, offer free online tools that ask a few quick questions about your flow, age, activity level, and anatomy. They’ll suggest a cup (or a few options) that match what you need.

It’s not a perfect science, but it’s a solid starting point. And considering how personal period care is, it makes a big difference to start with something designed for you, not just what’s most popular.

Reusable products aren’t for everyone, and that’s okay. But if you’re curious, trying just one—maybe a cup, or a cloth pad on a quiet day—can be a surprisingly empowering shift. You don’t have to overhaul your whole routine all at once. Just explore what fits.
