How I Help My Clients Spot the Hidden Fees Sabotaging Their Investment Returns

As a financial advisor here in beautiful San Diego and the founder of COPIA Wealth Management & Insurance Services, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients over the years who came to me wondering why their investment portfolios weren’t performing the way they expected. Often, they had a hunch something wasn’t quite right—but they couldn’t put their finger on it. More times than I can count, we discovered the same culprit: hidden fees.

If you’ve ever opened your investment statement and felt confused, you’re not alone. The financial world can feel like a maze, and hidden fees are some of the most frustrating traps in it. These sneaky costs may seem small, but over time, they can significantly reduce your returns and hurt your financial goals.

Today, I want to help you understand where these hidden fees hide, how they can impact your long-term wealth, and what you can do to protect yourself with more transparency and a fiduciary-focused financial advisor.

Why Transparency Matters So Much in Financial Planning

When you work with a financial advisor—or any financial professional, really—you deserve to understand exactly what you’re paying for. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Many advisors or financial companies bury fees in complex disclosures or gloss over them entirely during meetings.

To me, that’s unacceptable. I believe in complete transparency. I want my clients to feel informed and empowered—not in the dark about how their hard-earned money is being managed.

I’ve built COPIA Wealth Management & Insurance Services and COPIA Wealth Management Advisors Inc. on this very principle. As a fiduciary, I’m legally and ethically obligated to put your best interests first. That means not only making the right recommendations for your situation but also being crystal clear about what you’re paying and why.

The Real Cost of Hidden Fees

You might be thinking, “Okay, so there are fees—but how bad could they really be?” The answer might surprise you.

Let’s say you’re investing $250,000 over 20 years. A seemingly small difference in fees—say, 1% versus 2%—could cost you tens of thousands of dollars. That’s money that could’ve gone toward your retirement, your children’s education, or even your dream vacation.

Compounding Costs Over Time

Because investments grow over time through compounding, so do fees. A fee you’re charged today doesn’t just cost you that dollar amount—it costs you all the future growth that dollar could’ve earned. When you add that up over decades, the impact can be massive.

Where Hidden Fees Typically Lurk

Now let’s talk about where these fees like to hide. If you’re working with an advisor or investing on your own, it’s important to ask the right questions and understand these key categories:

1. Investment Product Fees (Expense Ratios)

If you own mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs), you’re likely paying an “expense ratio.” This is the fee that goes to the fund manager for operating the fund. While some index funds have very low fees (think 0.05%), actively managed mutual funds might charge 1% or more.

Even if you never see a bill, these fees are deducted from your returns automatically. That means your investment could be earning 7%, but you only see 6% because of the expense ratio.

2. Advisor Fees

There are a few ways financial advisors charge for their services:

  • Fee-only: Advisors charge a flat fee, hourly rate, or a percentage of your assets under management (AUM).
  • Commission-based: Advisors earn money by selling financial products, such as insurance or mutual funds.
  • Fee-based: This is a hybrid model, where advisors charge both fees and earn commissions.

At COPIA, I prefer the fee-only model whenever possible because it reduces conflicts of interest and allows me to focus on giving the best advice for you—not based on what I get paid to sell.

3. Trading Fees and Transaction Costs

If your investments are being actively traded, you might be paying transaction fees. These include:

  • Brokerage commissions
  • Bid-ask spreads
  • Platform or custodial fees

Frequent trading might not necessarily be a sign of proactive strategy—it could just be costing you more.

4. Annuity and Insurance Product Fees

Annuities can be helpful in some financial plans, but they’re notorious for high fees. These include:

  • Mortality and expense risk charges
  • Administrative fees
  • Surrender charges (if you withdraw early)
  • Rider fees (for optional benefits)

Before purchasing any annuity, make sure you fully understand all associated costs—and that it fits within your long-term plan.

What to Ask Your Financial Advisor

If you’re not sure whether you’re paying hidden fees, you’re not alone. Start by asking your advisor these five questions:

1. How are you compensated?

Are they fee-only, fee-based, or commission-based? Ask for a breakdown in writing.

2. What are the total costs of the investment products you’re recommending?

Ask about expense ratios, annuity fees, or other embedded costs.

3. Do you act as a fiduciary 100% of the time?

Some advisors are only fiduciaries part-time, depending on what they’re selling. You deserve full-time commitment.

4. Are there any conflicts of interest I should know about?

This question helps reveal if your advisor earns money from third-party sources for making certain recommendations.

5. Can you walk me through my statement and show me where fees appear?

If your advisor hesitates or gives you a vague answer, that’s a red flag.

How I Work With My Clients to Remove the Guesswork

My job isn’t just to grow your wealth—it’s to make sure you’re confident in every step of the journey. That’s why fee transparency is at the heart of every client conversation I have.

Here’s how I help remove the guesswork:

Personalized Plan Reviews

I walk my clients through their existing portfolios to identify hidden costs. Often, we uncover opportunities to reduce fees without compromising their investment goals.

Fiduciary Guidance

As a fiduciary, I always act in your best interest—not mine. That means no product pushing or commissions that could bias my recommendations.

Ongoing Communication

Your financial plan isn’t a one-time event. I check in regularly to review goals, rebalance portfolios, and keep everything aligned with your needs—and yes, that includes monitoring costs too.

Don’t Let Hidden Fees Derail Your Financial Future

If you’ve ever felt uneasy about what you’re paying in fees—or you’re just unsure—it’s time to take a closer look. Those small percentages can quietly erode your financial future. But with the right guidance, they don’t have to.

At COPIA Wealth Management, I’m here to support you with clarity, transparency, and a plan tailored to your life. If you’re ready for a second opinion or just want to understand your portfolio better, I’d love to chat.

You’ve worked hard for your money—let’s make sure it’s working just as hard for you.

Warmly,
Elisabeth Dawson
